Before you start
You will need:
- A Google login that can open your Google Ads account.
- Standard or Admin access on that account if you want to apply changes. With Read only access you can still run audits and see recommendations. Google explains the levels in About access levels.
- If you manage several accounts through a manager account (MCC), connect with the login that has access to the manager. Its client accounts are added for you.
Nothing changes without you
Connecting only lets Campaign Medic read your account. It never changes anything on its own. Every change is shown to you first and happens only when you click Apply Now. Scheduled audits find problems; they never apply fixes.
Create your account
- 1Go to campaignmedic.com/signup.
- 2Sign up with Continue with Google, or with your email and a password.
- 3If you used email, open the verification link we send you. You need a verified email before you can connect an ad account. Signing up with Google verifies you straight away.
The free plan needs no card. It includes 50 actions a month, where an action is one audit or one applied change.
Connect Google Ads
- 1In Campaign Medic, open Connect from the sidebar and click Connect Google Ads.
- 2Choose the Google login that has access to your ad account. It does not have to be the one you signed up with.
- 3Review the permissions and click Continue. You are returned to the Connect page with a confirmation message.
If Google says “Google hasn’t verified this app”
Google shows this screen while it finishes reviewing the access Campaign Medic asks for. To carry on, click Advanced, then the link to continue to campaignmedic.com. You then see the normal permission screen.
You can remove Campaign Medic's access at any time from your Google Account connections.
Google asks you to allow three things:
Google Ads
Required
Read your campaigns, keywords, search terms, ads and results, and make the changes you approve.
Search Console
Optional, read only
Compare paid search with your organic search results, so audits can spot paying for clicks you already win for free.
Google Analytics
Optional, read only
Compare ad results with revenue recorded on your site.
If Google lets you untick permissions, keep Google Ads ticked. Without it Campaign Medic cannot see your campaigns. Audits still work without Search Console and Analytics; they are just less detailed.
Choose your ad account
Every ad account your Google login can reach is added automatically. Accounts under a manager account are added individually, so you can audit each one.
- 1Use the account selector at the top of the app to switch between accounts.
- 2Open Campaigns to check your campaigns and their results are showing. The date picker next to the account selector sets the period you are looking at.
Set your guardrails
Guardrails are rules that block changes you never want made, even by accident. They are checked on our server every time a change is applied. Set them before you apply anything, under Settings Guardrails:
- Protected campaigns. Name specific campaigns, or a word such as “brand”, and no change will be made to any campaign that matches.
- Budget increase cap. The most a budget can go up in one change, as a percentage.
- Maximum daily budget. No change can set a daily budget above this amount.
- Block pausing. Stops any campaign or ad from being paused.
Run your first audit
- 1Open Audit, make sure Google Ads is selected, and click Run Audit.
- 2Wait about two minutes. The audit looks at the date range selected at the top of the app.
- 3Open the finished audit to see its recommendations, ranked by impact, each with the reason behind it and an estimate of what it saves or earns.
To catch new problems automatically, set a daily or weekly schedule on the same page. Scheduled audits count towards your monthly allowance like any other audit.
Approve and apply changes
Each recommendation goes through the same steps, and none are skipped:
- 1Read the recommendation. Click Approve if you agree, or Deny to dismiss it.
- 2Click Apply Now. You are shown the exact change that will be sent to Google Ads.
- 3Confirm. Your guardrails are checked, the change is made in your live account, and it is recorded.
Removing a campaign is permanent
Google Ads does not allow a removed campaign to be restored, by anyone. Campaign Medic asks you to type the campaign’s name before it will remove it. If you might want the campaign back, pause it instead.
Undo and measure
Operations lists every change applied to your account: what changed, when, and whether it succeeded. Most changes have an Undo button there, including:
- Adding negative keywords or keywords
- Pausing or enabling a campaign
- Pausing an ad
- Increasing a budget
Impact Monitor shows results before and after each change, so you can see whether it helped. If it did not, undo it.
Disconnect
On the Connect page, click Disconnect. Campaign Medic stops reading your account straight away. To remove access from Google's side as well, remove Campaign Medic from your Google Account connections.
Access to your account is stored encrypted and is never shared. Our privacy policy explains what we keep and for how long.
Troubleshooting
My ad account is not in the list
Campaign Medic can only see accounts that the Google login you connected with can see. Sign in to Google Ads with that same Google login and check the account is there. If it is not, ask an admin of the ad account to add that login under Admin Access and security, then click Reconnect on the Connect page.
If you connected with the wrong Google login, click Disconnect on the Connect page and connect again, choosing the right one.
“Please verify your email before connecting Google”
Open the verification link we emailed you when you signed up, then try again. If you cannot find it, check your spam folder or resend it from the checklist on your dashboard.
“Google Ads was not connected because access was cancelled”
The Google permission screen was cancelled. Click Connect Google Ads again and choose Continue this time.
“Google did not give Campaign Medic lasting access”
Google sometimes skips a step when Campaign Medic was connected before. Remove Campaign Medic from your Google Account connections, then connect again from the Connect page.
I am asked to reconnect when I run an audit
Campaign Medic has lost access to the account, usually because access was removed in your Google Account or the login lost access to the ad account. Click Reconnect in the prompt and approve access again. Nothing about your audits or settings is lost.
A change was blocked by a guardrail
That is your guardrails working. The message names the rule that stopped it. If you want the change to go ahead, adjust the rule under Settings Guardrails and apply it again.
I have used my monthly allowance
Audits and applied changes count towards your plan's monthly allowance, which resets on the 1st of each month. You can see what you have used on the Usage page, or upgrade from Billing for a higher limit.
An audit failed
Open the audit to see the reason, then run it again. If it fails a second time, email hello@campaignmedic.com with the account name and we will look into it.
Still stuck? Email hello@campaignmedic.com and we will help.
